Winter Skin — It’s crackin me up…literally

Dry skin is just a fact in my life. I’ve accepted it. But this year it seems worse. Sigh. More water? Will that help…I haven’t been good about that. More lotion? Help! SELF magazine to the rescue…they debunk the winter skin myths…

  • Myth: It’s OK to slack off on sunscreen in winter.
  • Truth: The sun’s rays are just as dangerous when it’s cold out!
  • Myth: Cold air makes your skin peel.
  • Truth: Actually, it’s indoor heat that causes flaky winter skin. Indoor heat can be super-dry, so lower the temp a bit or get a humidifier.
  • Myth: Drinking tons of water quenches dry skin.
  • Truth: For max moisture, nutrients are key. Make sure you get enough omega-3 fatty acids from foods like salmon and halibut.
  • Myth: Baths are better than showers on cold days.
  • Truth: Hot baths make you sweat, which makes moisture evaporate. If you must, keep it short and use a creamy wash.
  • Myth: Use moisturizer to soften rough feet.
  • Truth: It’s more important to exfoliate. Any moisturizer will work much better once you get rid of thick, tough skin on heels.
  • Myth: Lip balm makes your lips MORE chapped.
  • Truth: Licking your lips is more likely to blame — licking or pressing your lips together leaves behind saliva that dries lips out.
