My sister Rhonda called me yesterday. On her mind: Sex and The City 2. The reviews are apparently less than stellar and she wanted to know what I though about the movie. I don’t read reviews when it comes to my girls.
Rhonda asked me what I thought…
Was it as good as the first one? No. Would I see a SATC 3? Absolutely. And here’s why:
Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda are my girls…
For years I followed their exploits around NYC each week. I ordered HBO for the sole purpose of Sex and the City. I rented the DVD’s from Blockbuster an eventually bought each season. I agonized over their decision to do a movie, ignored the previews and rumors so I could fully experience it, and watched the movie four times in theatre before buying the extended cut DVD.
This is a marathon, not a sprint…I’d rather see my girls than the latest America’s Sweetheart auditionee try her hand at a chick flick.
SATC2 was not as good as the first. But just as men tune in to the 507th edition of Bond, I want to see what my heroines are doing. I want to see them continue to save the world with fashion, fabulous and friendship.
The missing girlfriend…
Where SATC2 went wrong is forgetting what Michael Patrick King and Sarah Jessica Parker have both highlighted in the past: The fifth girlfriend and star of SATC is NYC. Where was the concrete jungle in SATC2?
At this point, I will NEVER do or see the concrete jungle as fabulously as my Sex and the City girls. I missed NYC. I needed NYC. Every time anyone left NYC in the series, it just wasn’t right. Whether it was the bus tour to LA via train, the four ladies in LA, Atlantic City, or especially Carrie in Paris. The only trip that didn’t feel wrong was the MexiComa Honeymoon, but we were all in mourning and needed to get out of NYC for a little healing. The parts of SATC2 that were in NYC were fabulous and comfortable.
Yes, there were other things “wrong” with the movie. But Rhonda said it best on the phone. It is like an episode of the show that wasn’t my favorite. I am still going to watch the next episode. At the end of the day, I want to check in on the ultimate soulmates.
Will Charlotte have a third flower themed child? Daisy anyone?
Will Samantha settle down? Hey, it could happen.
Will Carrie and Big continue being a solid couple? How sweet was the “You’re a rookie at marriage” scene?
Will Miranda be truly content with her rooftop law firm? It is a joy to see scenes with Steve and Magda.
Will Anthony be true to Stanford?
I want the fashion, I want NYC, I want my SATC3. Pretty please.
