So I am teaching my weekly Sunday Jazzercise class at the JCC. Class is going according to plan. We had just finished a kickin’ cardio and started a standing leg routine (Anastacia’s “Overdue Goodbye.”), when all of a sudden the fire alarm went off. Lights were flashing and a recording telling us to evacuate kept playing. It wasn’t a drill!
In that moment all I could think about was (a) the safety of my students, and (b) the fact that they came to get a workou
t by jove!
So without skipping a beat, I told them to grab all of their things including their weights, and out we went. When we got outside I surveyed the area, found a park bench, and class continued.
Thank goodness the weather was under 100 degrees and windy for a change.
There was no mic, no music, no gym floor. I cue’d/sang the songs as they sang along to Jason Mraz, Queen Latifah, and more.
As the fire truck pulled up and the fireman got out, they stopped in their tracks, looked at us and laughed for quite at least 10 seconds. Then they remembered why they were there and headed into the building.
I heart my students and the class managers! They went with the flow and didn’t skip a beat! Love them.
