No I don’t cook. But I do Have Turkey Advice…

When do you buy a Turkey?

I’ve been asking my Jazzercise class that question over the past week.  When is the right time to buy a turkey for the big Thanksgiving day? Some of my clients already purchased their turkey, others still needed to get to it.

I ask, not because I have any intention whatsoever to get a turkey, but more because if for some reason I need to go to the grocery store this week, I want to go when it isn’t crazy busy.

Also, I find the turkey a fascinating concept. Once a year Americans stress out over cooking this big huge bird! Here is what I’ve learned about the bird.

Consider this Turkey advice from a woman who doesn’t know a thing about the kitchen…

  • If you buy a frozen turkey, you need to put it in the refrigerator for a week to thaw for a week! That’s doable for me since I have takeout boxes, drinks and yogurt in my fridge. But if you are cooking, that is a lot of room to suck up! My recommendation: store the bird in my fridge. I have room for about 5 of them…call me.
  • You can emergency defrost your bird in the dishwasher. Fact! Two of my clients told me that yesterday, and I’m standing by it. Just don’t tell anyone until they’ve moved on to the dessert. And speaking of the dessert…
  • No one remembers how good your turkey was. But they will always remember your Pumpkin Pie! The turkey is just the necessary vehicle to get to the pumpkin pie.

My “secret” for the perfect turkey? Brine it the night before. Use a big ice chest or cooler that you can submerge your turkey in completely. Use some broth and spices to add flavor, and a bunch of salt. As it soaks in the brine, the turkey will absorb a ton of water (and the flavor with it). Then, when you cook it, it will be difficult to have a turkey that isn’t super juicy.
