If you have lived in Austin for the past 35years, you know that Christmas doesn’t officially start until The Junior League of Austin has its annual A Christmas Affair–4 1/2 days of shopping with over 230 merchants from around the country, parties and more. If you are looking for a gift for that special someone or even a not so special someone, you can find it all here.
As a member of the League, I volunteer at the event each year. Day 2 just ended and I’m headed up there again tomorrow. My job is the info booth/”The Voice of A Christmas Affair.” I make announcements over the intercom and answer questions galore. Shocker, I know.
Actually what you may be truly shocked about is that fact that I, Roxanne Wilson am in The League. Put aside your thoughts or assumptions about The Junior League. In Austin, we aren’t like the book The Help. I like to call us a working League, because over 80% of our members work outside of the home and we aren’t afraid the get dirty, break a few nails and do all we can to help our community.
Which brings me back to A Christmas Affair, yes it looks pretty, but it takes a lot of work before, during and after to make it happen. What I love about A Christmas Affair is that the money raised goes to support the Austin community. The Junior League of Austin not only awards grants to Austin area charities to support their cause and increase their impact, but we train women to be amazing leaders in the community. Many members have gone on to be the CEOs of Non-Profits, Government Officials, and overall have made Austin a better place.
If you are headed out to A Christmas Affair this year, and I hope you are, look out for these cards …they are just a reminder of what we do and why we do it and how you can be a part of it. For more info on A Christmas Affair or to become part of this wonderful organization, click here: JLAustin.org
